Pride Go-Go Scooter Charger Blinking Red: Meaning & Replacements
When you plug in your Pride Go-Go travel scooter and the charger flashes red continuously or refuses to turn green after overnight charging, the charging circuit has detected a fault.
Before assuming the expensive internal AGM battery pack has reached end-of-life, work through these three simple physical checks. A loose XLR connector pin, an unseated battery box, or a popped circuit breaker cause a majority of charging lockouts.
Diagnostic checks before buying a charger
1. Check the battery box reset breaker
Every Pride Go-Go battery box has a small black button or toggle labeled “Circuit Breaker” on the exterior case near the handle or charging port.
- If the scooter was driven over a steep threshold, carried a heavy load, or experienced a minor electrical surge, the breaker pops out approximately 1/4 inch.
- When popped, the charger cannot communicate with the batteries and flashes an error code.
- Firmly push the black circuit breaker button back in until it clicks flush.
2. Inspect the 3-pin XLR charging port
Look closely inside the round 3-pin charging receptacle on the battery box or scooter tiller:
- Verify that all three metal male pins are straight and clean.
- Look for lint, pocket debris, or bent pins. If a pin is bent sideways, the charger plug cannot make full contact.
- Never use a metal screwdriver to straighten pins while the battery box is attached to the scooter.
3. Verify off-board vs. on-board charging
Pride Go-Go scooters support dual-port charging:
- If you normally charge via the port beneath the handlebars (on-board), remove the entire battery box from the scooter deck and plug the charger directly into the round XLR port on the battery box itself (off-board).
- If the charger works when plugged directly into the battery box but fails when plugged into the tiller, the internal wiring harness running through the steering column has pinched or disconnected. The charger itself is fine.
Fitment & replacement guide
If the charger LED stays dark when connected to a live wall outlet, or if the outer cable casing has split and exposed inner wires, replace the charging unit immediately:
- Voltage: Must be 24 Volts DC (mobility scooter batteries are wired in series: two 12V cells = 24V). Never use an automotive 12V charger.
- Amperage: 2.0 Amps is standard for 12Ah and 18Ah Go-Go travel packs.
- Connector: Standard 3-pin XLR round female plug (Pin 1 positive, Pin 2 negative).
